The Search Engine LIST
continues to grow... above are major search
programs, to find what ever you want. There are more too, but easy
does it...
The
artwork above (or image Map) encompasses a collection of
the most commonly used Search Engines, Index Directories, Crawlers... and
I've added Search
Engine Watch
(part of internet.com) to this
doc, as a point of reference.
Each Logo (above) is a
separate link to each of these operating engines pages.
To find
subjects you are looking for in the World Wide Web, individual
companies have developed FREE* services that search and index a huge collection of
information from webs and pages that exist . There are also
pay-per-search-pages *not
listed above
The companies work differently, therefore no
SINGLE engine or index
has the exact same
collection of web pages to search through. The growth and direction of the internet is still
unpredictable, therefore, search engines and indexing directories are our
best resources on the net.
There are options that allow you to "refine" your searches with more accuracy. In AltaVista's search engine,
add a plus sign "+" right before each keyword in your search entry. For example:
[ +recipes +free +online ] The " plus sign" works to pull up more relevant
matches.
As well you can add "minus signs" if you'd like to avoid
certain sites such as -sales. More on this can be found here
Point your
curser-arrow on top of one of the logos above, click on it and wait
for your computer to LINK you to their site. Follow their
simple instructions to begin using their services and
tools, which usually have a search box to type some keyword or keywords (words relevant to
what you're seeking info on).
There is a search button
along side the keyword box, which you click on, to start
the engine's search. After clicking search button, wait
for a new page to load into your screen. This page lists
at least 10 pages relevant to the keywords you typed in.
You will still need to read each individual link at a
time, so be patient.
YAHOO and AOL NetFind, although popular to new users or those unaware of a bigger picture, are not the only ones with indexing and search capacity. AltaVista still holds
high
ratings over many years with their accuracy, being used worldwide.
With highly specialized targeted subjects and media (e.g., NCSTRL), the most commonly used engines and indexes are: AltaVista,
Google, Excite, MSN, Teoma, Infoseek, HotBot, Lycos, Open Text Index, WorldPages, WebCrawler, Yahoo, GoTo.com,
AOL NetFind.... yeesh.. (see below)
Taking just a small amount of time to read what each individual Search Engine or Index offers, will make the difference in precision of your results in what you're seeking. Slap Happy "hits" to ya!
